Prior to this version, you could choose any file on the hard drive, in addition to files on remote servers (such as on an AFP shared volume). A simple editing of a .plist file will allow you enter any path on the system. [ crarko adds: The Backup 3.2 program is fully functional only to MobileMe subscribers, and is complementary to Time Machine.] The backup information is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Backup/BackupSets/ . The folders in there have a unique id, so you will will have to drill down in each one to find the Backup you…

Generally, when files are dropped in your ~/Public/Drop Box you can only read them. You have to save a copy if you edit it. I wanted a script that would enable writing and that moved them to your desktop. So I wrote a Folder Action that let me do both things. If I could not enable them because of limitations, I want a sudo (SuperUser Do) to be used....

Time Machine, the automated backup utility built into Mac OS X, is set to run every hour by default. Is this too often for you? Find out how you can change the backup interval, plus how to initiate backups only when you trigger them manually. For most people, hourly backups with Time Machine are just right for keeping their Mac’s precious files...

Since iTunes does not give you a lot of information via print or export of your apps, I wrote a little shell script to retrieve information from the app files themselves. The script creates and opens a .csv file. To correctly display the columns, choose ’semicolons’ as the column delimiter in your csv viewer (e.g. OpenOffice Calc). You...

Do you like to know which files and folders get created or modified when you install a new application? I can suggest two different solutions: Either use a tool to track all file system changes, or use a tool that searches the disk by creation/modification dates. [ robg adds: This hint includes information about using a free program, Find Any File...

I use Dropbox to keep files in sync between my work computer (a PC), my MacBook Pro, and an iMac at home. Although Dropbox is great, it keeps the files that it syncs to the cloud in a Dropbox folder. I have my own folder/file organization for projects, which I would prefer to maintain. I found that I could keep…

Over the weekend, I was installing a demo of some web-based help desk software, and this particular package used encrypted PHP files. With my hosting company, I have to place a php.ini file in every directory that contains encrypted files, or the site won’t work. I use Apple’s Backup.app to back up files to my iDisk, and this has been working successfully for years. Recently, though, I started getting backup failures. After a lot of head scratching, it seems that Backup was failing because of a series of files that were user read-only, and had no permissions at all for group and other. Quite why this...

I did not like to see the backup sparsebundle image from the Time Machine backup in the Time Capsule directory. So I made it hidden with this command in Terminal (after I used cd to get into the Time Capsule directory): chflags -R hidden MyComputername.sparsebundle/ The backup still works, even though the backup file is hidden.

It bugs me that Time Machine won’t backup my encrypted home folder, provided by File Vault, while I’m logged in. I rarely log out of my account, and that makes Time Machine pretty useless in my opinion. I wanted some way to create a backup while logged in. I’m more concerned about my laptop being stolen than my backup drive, since...
