I have multiple mail accounts and folders set up in Mail, including the Junk folder. I found that after deleting mail from the Junk folder, and from multiple different accounts’ inboxes, that when I went to the Trash and selected all items and pressed the Delete key, only some of the items would be deleted — I would have to “select all” a

This hint enables you to turn off (and back on) moving files to Trash when deleting files, thus deleting them immediately when the trash is off. This hint takes advantage of the fact that if the .Trashes folder in a user’s home folder is not accessible, Mac OS X ignores it and displays an immediate file deletion warning like the one seen at...
Trash won’t empty? The ultimate guide to deleting stubborn files
Mac OS X occasionally gets hung up on stubborn files and refuses to easily delete them. If you can’t empty your Mac’s Trash, try some of these techniques to get rid of those nasty errors and clear out the junk. As a Mac user, you’ve probably found yourself in a situation where you needed to force empty the Trash. Perhaps a message...
10.6: Set time of deletion for files placed in the Trash
10.6: Set time of deletion for files placed in the Trash
To make it easier to retrieve accidentally-deleted items from the trash, you can use an Automator workflow and the third-party Automator action Touch Files to create a “date deleted” time stamp on files placed in the trash. Here’s how: Download the Automator action and unzip it. Open Automator and import this action (File  Read More →
Quickly archive and/or delete Gmail messages in Mail.app
Quickly archive and/or delete Gmail messages in Mail.app
In the recent Move messages to a target folder via keyboard shortcut hint, I noticed a user describing a script he’d written to allow him to archive messages from four different Gmail accounts. I replied with this simpler suggestion, and I think perhaps it might merit being considered as a hint in its own right. A quick search of the site didn’t...
Delete email in Mail without showing next message
Delete email in Mail without showing next message
One of the “features” in Apple’s Mail program that has always annoyed me is how it handles messages after doing a delete operation. If you press Delete to throw away the message you’re currently looking at, Mail displays the next message (marking it read in the process). While I like the fact that Mail marks displayed messages...
Use OS X’s trash in a Finder-like way from Terminal
Use OS X’s trash in a Finder-like way from Terminal
I’ve written a few bash functions to interact with the normal Mac OS X trash can. This is actually slightly more complicated that it sounds at first, since the trash can is not just a folder somewhere. Each volume has its own trash, and your home folder has a trash can. Finder uses your home trash for any files on the boot volume, unless you...

10.6: Secure empty trash via Dock’s trash can icon
If you click-and-hold on the Trash icon in the Dock, the contextual menu appears, showing Open and Empty Trash. Press and hold the Command key, though, and Empty Trash turns into Secure Empty Trash.  Read More →
10.6: View an email message’s folder path in Mail
10.6: View an email message’s folder path in Mail
Locating an email message in your Mail folder hierarchy is now a snap. As of Snow Leopard’s version of Mail, if you open a message in a new window, Command-clicking (or Control-clicking) on the icon in the title bar of the message window will reveal the path to the enclosing folder for the message (just like it does in the Finder). Select...

10.6: Delete selected page(s) from a PDF in Preview
The function to delete the selected page (or pages) from a PDF file disappeared from the Edit menu of Preview in Snow Leopard. Even worse, it was replaced (using the same Command-Delete shortcut) with a command that moves the entire PDF document to the trash. You can, however, still delete selected page(s) through an undocumented keyboard shortcut....
Delete file from network volume without warning dialog
Delete file from network volume without warning dialog
Whenever I delete a file from a network volume, I’m warned: ‘The item “File name” will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?’ with Cancel or Delete as options. The Cancel button is always the default option. If you really want to delete the file, you need to use the mouse to select the non-default...
