10.6: Let Time Machine backup File Vault while logged in
January 27th, 2010 admin

It bugs me that Time Machine won’t backup my encrypted home folder, provided by File Vault, while I’m logged in. I rarely log out of my account, and that makes Time Machine pretty useless in my opinion. I wanted some way to create a backup while logged in. I’m more concerned about my laptop being stolen than my backup drive, since it’s sitting in my closet, attached to my AirPort Base Station. So…

Time Machine, the automated backup utility built into Mac OS X, is set to run every hour by default. Is this too often for you? Find out how you can change the backup interval, plus how to initiate backups only when you trigger them manually. For most people, hourly backups with Time Machine are just right for keeping their Mac’s precious files...

I did not like to see the backup sparsebundle image from the Time Machine backup in the Time Capsule directory. So I made it hidden with this command in Terminal (after I used cd to get into the Time Capsule directory): chflags -R hidden MyComputername.sparsebundle/ The backup still works, even though the backup file is hidden.

After restoring from a Time Machine backup, I ran into this error when Time Machine then tried to create a new backup: The backup is too large for the backup volume. xxGB is required but only yyGB is available. This occurs because Time Machine sees your restored computer as a completely new set of data and is trying to do a full back up. To solve...

It is both inconvenient and less safe to keep backup volumes mounted except when in use. A mounted volume is more prone to corruption, and open file dialogs needlessly spin up mounted volumes, contributing to a user experience latency that is most apparent if the primary drive is solid state. By creating an /etc/periodic/hourly directory modeled...

By now, everyone knows how to delete a file or folder from time-machine using the Gear menu in Time Machine’s Finder view. But I was puzzled by the problem of deleting entries for an entire external disk I no longer had. Because that disk was no longer available, I could not simply attach the disk and then use Time Machine to delete the backups...

With Apple’s release of Backup 3.2 in April, they removed the ability to chose files and folders located outside of your home folder. Prior to this version, you could choose any file on the hard drive, in addition to files on remote servers (such as on an AFP shared volume). A simple editing of a .plist file will allow you enter any path on...

This is a Snow Leopard update, and a bundling of, the hint on using Time Machine on a networked AFP volume and this comment about creating a bootable Time Machine backup. Issues addressed: I have a Time Machine backup disk in my office, and I want it to be encrypted in case of, for instance, theft of the disk. I have a shared Time Machine server...

Yesterday, I had problems restarting my Mac mini, so I booted off an external hard disk with a clone, and fixed the startup problem. This morning, I needed to find a file in my Time Machine backup, but all my backups prior to the moment I booted from the external disk were dark in the Time Machine timeline (at the right of the screen). In the Finder,...

While looking for the perfect product to keep my photos safe, I discovered that sometimes simple is best. My requirements were simple: ensure that all my digital photos, stored on a locally attached USB drive, were duplicated to another drive attached to my AirPort Extreme. My photos are in RAW format (specifically DNG files) and will never change,...

In Snow Leopard it’s rather easy to have multiple Time Machine backups with different settings. You can simply write a script to change the preference files for the two (or more) different drives. Up until now, my Time Machine has always been backing up on different drives without even turning it off or on again to let it accept the new preferences....
