Filed under: How-tos , iTunes , AppleScript The ability to sync albums artists didn’t exist prior to iTunes 9.0. My workaround to sync albums was is to create album-based playlists with the following nomenclature: artist – album . This has also made it easy for me to burn CDs of albums, as I could just navigate to a playlist and click...

5 Smart Playlists to help you manage your iTunes library
Filed under: How-tos , iTunes , TUAW Tips Smart playlists have been a feature of iTunes since version 3.0 (circa 2002), and they provide a means for you to create automatically-updated playlists that fit a certain criteria. For me, they serve as a hands-off way to stay up-to-date on my latest music and Podcasts, as well as a repository for a certain...

How to organize photo albums on iPhone/iPod touch
Before iTunes 9, when you wanted to organize the order of the photo albums on your iPhone or iPod touch, you could simply drag the photo albums up and down from within iTunes when your device was connected to your computer. Now, with iTunes 9, you can no longer drag the albums around from within iTunes. You must rearrange the albums to their desired...
Add currently-playing track an iPhone/iPod playlist
Add currently-playing track an iPhone/iPod playlist
This AppleScript will add the current track you are playing to a play list (currently named street ) on your iPhone (or iPod). It will also make a backup of this added track to a playlist on the iTunes local playlists (also named street ). The script also checks first if a song exists on the playlist, so as to not duplicate any tracks. …  Read More →

Sort by album then by artist in iTunes’ library view
If you’re an iTunes master user, you’ll probably say “well, duh!” to this hint…but if you’re like me, it might save you some frustration. I was doing some work on my library over the weekend, and had my collection sorted by Album. As it turns out, there are three albums named ‘Home’ in my library; when...

One way to use iTunes when it’s blocked by a progress dialog
Have you ever had to move your iTunes library, or done any other task that popped up a lengthy progress window? If so, you know that this dialog prevents you from using iTunes, as you can’t get to any of its menus or controls. This is very annoying — especially as I’m currently consolidating my library to a network volume over a...

Separate radio streams and spoken MP3s from music in iTunes
Here are two problems that have frustrated me with iTunes for the longest time: My iTunes library contains a few entries that are not really music (e.g., comedy or spoken word), and I don’t like them cluttering up my “Music” library. I have a few streaming radio stations that I listen to often and are listed in my Music library...

Rather than focus on specific system applications like we’ve done for the past few articles, let’s take a broader look at 10.6 Snow Leopard and cover some random odds & ends. According to our statistics, the latest version of Mac OS X is already being used by over one-third of MacYourself’s visitors. That’s a pretty darn...

Manage multiple iTunes & iPhoto libraries on the same computer
Since Apple software such as iTunes and iPhoto uses libraries to organize content, you may think you’re limited to just one per user account. It turns out these programs can actually manage multiple libraries at the same time. When most people think of putting more than one iTunes or iPhoto library on a Mac, they usually associate that with...
Use iTunes Home Sharing to help merge music collections
Use iTunes Home Sharing to help merge music collections
I happen to have come into possession of a lot of extra music. Adding it all to iTunes would have mucked up my library with music I don’t want, as well as adding many duplicates. So I created a temp user account (or use another computer on the network) and imported the music into a new iTunes library. I set up Home Sharing for that library....
