  News Update: Paul Allen Sues Apple,...
  The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft Corp., is suing 11 companies for patent violation through his firm Interval Licensing LLC. The lawsuit implicates Apple, Google, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo and YouTube. Allen claims the companies are using technology his company and laboratory developed and patented, including technology that allows sites to make product suggestions to consumers related to the ones they are currently viewing among others. The now defunct lab and tech firm, Interval Research, was financed by Allen with around $100 million during the Internet bubble. Allen did not develop any of the technology in question himself, but he does own the patents. There is no estimated damage amount.

  News Update: Google Internet Search...
  Google Inc. (GOOG) is down near 1% and under selling pressure in afternoon trading after a new report by Internet tracking firm comScore showed erosion in Google's search market share for the second consecutive month, while rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo! (YHOO) posted gains. Google opened down $4.51 at $482.50, made a brief morning run to a session high of $487.72, and then fell back, testing its session low of $481.62 following release of the report. ComScore Inc. said that Google's market shares for Internet search fell in May to 63.7%. At the same time, Yahoo and Microsoft both gained during that period with a combined 30.4%, the report said. Google shares are down $4.41, or 0.91%, to $482.40. Microsoft shares are up 1.52%, or 0.37, to $25.38. Yahoo shares are up 0.40%, or $0.06, to $15.16.

  Google Real Time search update with...
  Maile Ohye, Google, discusses the advent of Googles real time search. Google debuted real-time search back in December of 2009. Maile says Google is interested in delivering content to users that is relevant and in real time from a variety of sources. Its not just about microblogs or news information but finding content from anyone who wants to be a publisher and pushing it out in real time for users. Maile then lists the various sources that Google gets its real time content. This includes Twitter, Google news, Facebook MySpace, and Google Buzz. Maile says as Google opens up delivery of real time content, it will ensure that the quality and relevancy is there to satisfy users. Maile mentions that Google is capable of indexing its content in less than a minute. To constantly keep improving upon the content delivered, Google also uses various metrics called happiness metrics in order to determine if the real-time results were found to be helpful by users. Some of the papers are kind of spotty on the issues they have, but you can't complain about the price ;-) Maybe not as good as subscription sites, but on the other hand I have found information not on them.   Krishna Bharat is the founder of Google News. He gave a keynote lecture on June 7th 2010 at the 7th annual Innovation Journalism conference at Stanford University near Google's headquarters in 'Silicon Valley', California. Krishna gave this exclusive interview to Winchester Journalism, giving advice on how journalists should write in order to maximise the chances of their work turning up in Google searches and also of being aggregated as part of the Google News Service. Krishna also comments on the economic model for journalism in the age of the internet. Public funding, such as the BBC licence fee can play a role, he says, but it is ore likely that "hard news" will in future be provided by a smaller number of competitors. He predicts a trend towards mergers and consolidation in the news business. Background: Krishna Bharat is a Distinguished Researcher at Google Inc. in Mountain View, Calif., and leads a team developing Google's news products. Krishna is the creator of Google News, which won the 2003 Webby Award in the news category. Also, he received the 2003 World Technology Award for Media & Journalism. In 2004 he founded Google's R&D operations in India and served as the center's first director until 2006. Before joining Google in 1999, he was a member of the research staff at DEC Systems Research Center in Palo Alto, Calif. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech in 1996.
