I’ve been wanting Apple to add the ability to close an app or window through Exposé since I first saw Exposé. With Snow Leopard, they’ve at least gone part way there. If you invoke Exposé’s All Windows or App Windows mode by whatever method, you can then click on a running app in the Dock to have Exposé focus on that app (either changing focus from one app to another in App Windows mode, or switching to App Windows mode from All Windows mode). This is nice, but better yet is that the abbreviated Dock contextual menu will show, on a single left click, allowing you to quit, hide, or set options for the focused app. The only thing missing now, IMHO, is …

10.6: Add applications to Exposé
You all probably know about Exposé’s Application Mode (introduced in 10.6 I think). What’s interesting is that while you’re in it, you can Command+click on other running applications and bring their windows into Exposé as well. Steps to reproduce: Open Application Exposé (click and hold on any running application in the Dock)....
10.6: Only show windows from current Space in Exposé
10.6: Only show windows from current Space in Exposé
I’ve noticed in 10.6 that when I use Exposé in Application Windows mode, it shows me all my windows, not just the ones in the current Space. I always end up clicking on the wrong window and being whisked away to a another Space. To stop that from happening, open Terminal and run these two commands: $ defaults write com.apple.dock wvous-show-windows-in-other-spaces...
Add a Show Desktop icon to the Dock
Add a Show Desktop icon to the Dock
Wouldn’t it be nice to activate Expos’s Show Desktop mode via an icon on the Dock? Here’s how to make one that does just that. However, be warned: this works only one way — it shows the Desktop, but on clicking again, it does not bring the windows back. To get out of Expos’s Show Desktop mode, just click anywhere along...
Even more ways to utilize Exposé in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
We published an article called “ Cool new enhancements to Exposé in Mac OS X Snow Leopard ” a couple weeks ago thinking that was all the feature had to offer, but it turns out that’s not the case. There are even more nifty tricks to learn! As mentioned in the previous post on this topic, 10.6 Snow Leopard integrates Exposé into...
Cool new enhancements to Exposé in Mac OS X Snow Leopard
Exposé was fantastic before, and with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard it just got even better. Apple has made great changes to the way it displays windows and how users can interact with them. Snow Leopard, the new version of Mac OS X that shipped this past Friday, is chock-full of little improvements that make the overall user experience better. As one...

10.6: Focus on an individual window within Spaces overview
In Spaces you can reach an overview mode by pressing the F8 key, giving you an overview of your spaces. However, it is hard to see the individual windows within this mode, as they may be tiny. The solution is to hover over a window and press the space bar; it will focus on the window and expand it to full size for easy reading. You can click on...

Set Dock auto-hide state via AppleScript
Set Dock auto-hide state via AppleScript
There are dozens of hints that programatically toggle the Dock’s auto-hide state. Some suggest modifying com.apple.Dock, then killing the dock. Others rely on sending keystrokes to merely toggle the dock state. Neither of these give the user elegant control over the state of the dock. So, I’ve written a small snippet of AppleScript combining...

Remap only the Exposé key for Spaces use on Unibody laptops
The Unibody Macs have some pre-defined function keys that are hard to remap. For those of us who use Spaces, but not Exposé, here’s how to remap the key. The Exposé key on Unibody MacBook Pros can’t easily be remapped through System Preferences without unmapping all the other special function keys, like volume and screen brightness....

To use the old-style contextual menus when you click-and-hold on an application’s icon in the Dock (i.e. how it worked in 10.5 and earlier), type the following two commands in Terminal (don’t type the $ ): defaults write com.apple.dock show-expose-menus -bool no; killall Dock All credit for this hint goes to Jeff Johnson of Lap Cat Software,...
